FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know my son got selected for the opportunity to play for Select Generation FC and it’s not a pay to play?
Players are hand-picked after Select Generation scouts have either seen them play live or, in rare cases, reviewed full game footage. SGFC competes in the highly competitive English football pyramid, where promotion and relegation are fundamental.
Our roster is capped at 25 players, and we only offer contracts to those we believe have the talent to make the squad and help achieve promotion. We focus on selecting elite players with the potential to turn professional or earn an NCAA scholarship.
How is the Select Generation FC program in Bournemouth, England different than your program in Spain?
Both programs offer the same high standard of coaching and the opportunity for elite North American athletes to test themselves in competitive soccer leagues in countries with a rich soccer culture. Both offer accommodation and meal plans.
The main difference is the additional academic options available in Bournemouth. Our Spain program, which began in September 2024, is designed as a developmental gap year with limited direct links to Spanish universities.
In contrast, the Bournemouth program offers access to a 3-year, FAFSA-eligible university degree and one-year vocational courses at a local college. The playing style in England tends to be faster and more physical compared to Spain. Players are recruited based on scouting feedback, and we will recommend the appropriate program based on the player’s preferences, playing style, and potential.
Why should I go to University in England? Is it the same degree as in the US? What are the benefits?
Studying in England allows you to earn a recognized degree in as little as three years, saving time and money compared to many U.S. programs. Bournemouth University, for example, is ranked in the UK and offers more affordable tuition than many private or out-of-state U.S. schools. You can still apply for FAFSA, loans, and financial aid, while gaining valuable international experience for your resume.
If a player stays with a host family, how can I be assured of their safety?
We partner with Hosts International, a trusted accommodation provider. They offer quality, vetted homestay hosts who meet our and the British Council's strict standards.
All hosts are police-checked and undergo safeguarding training. Hosts International has extensive experience working with students of all ages, including those under 18, and will match your son with a suitable host family to ensure a safe environment.
Can I get student funding?
If your son applies for a student visa to attend Bournemouth University, he can apply for FAFSA, which will help cover tuition and accommodation costs. Further details will be provided in writing once an offer is made. For more information, visit BU Student Funding
My son wants to go to Bournemouth University, if he applies today how long will it take for us to know he is accepted?
Select Generation provides a mentored application process for players applying to Bournemouth University. The university typically aims to make a decision within four weeks of receiving the application. If a player has not received their final results yet, their offer will be conditional upon submitting official high school transcripts. Incomplete applications may delay the process.
What happens if a pro club wants my son during the season?
We hope this happens! If a professional club shows interest in your son, we will work closely with the player and their family to assess any offer and determine the best next step. Player development is a key objective of Select Generation. In our inaugural season, we've already sent two players to a pro club in the third tier of Spanish football.
My son wants to play college soccer in the NCAA. Can he still do that if he plays for SGFC for one year?
Yes! SGFC players maintain full NCAA eligibility while playing for Select Generation. If they are studying full-time at Bournemouth University or Bournemouth & Poole College, their NCAA clock will start. However, if they are on a tourist visa, their NCAA clock will not start.
What’s the difference between an A level and University?
The closest U.S. equivalent to the UK's A Levels are Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams. Bournemouth College offers a one-year A Level course, allowing credits to be transferred to U.S. institutions. In contrast, Bournemouth University offers a three-year bachelor’s degree, which is equivalent to a typical four-year U.S. degree.
It’s a one year season, but can he come home for Christmas?
We will have a 2 week break around the Christmas period for players who wish to return home.
What happens if he gets ill or injured? Does he need health insurance?
For students on a student visa, the application fee includes access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS), with a one-time fee of £490 and a yearly £776 contribution. If your son is on a tourist visa, private health insurance will be required.

Accommodation arrangements for players.
Each player will have their own individual room with essential amenities, including a bed, desk, wardrobe, and a private bathroom. If a player is offered university accommodation or off-campus housing, details will be provided.
Does the team play against academies, or men's teams?
Our team competes within the FIFA system in England under the FA (Football Association). Select Generation FC will be entering a senior team in Step 8 of the English football pyramid, along with a regional U23 academy league to provide additional tactical and technical competition and greater exposure to different clubs. We play against academies and mens teams in two separate leagues.
How do players spend their spare time outside of training?
Players use their time away from the field by enrolling in university courses at Bournemouth University, or pursuing academic studies through affiliated online programs to earn credits for potential NCAA transfer. They also have access to a gym for workouts and recovery, as well as shared spaces to relax and unwind.
Are "courses" the same as a major, or do they refer to individual classes?
In the UK, "courses" typically refer to what you might call a "major" in the U.S. For example, if a student selects Business & Management as their course, this means they are choosing a major or area of study, not just a single class.
Within that course, students will take a variety of required units/modules (the equivalent of classes or subjects). The term "classes" in the UK usually refers to what you might call "lectures." So, when a student chooses Business & Management, they will follow a schedule of required modules for that major, not just one individual class.
What is the duration of the program offered?
The program runs from September to May/June, depending on whether the team advances to the playoffs. Players may be offered a one-year or three-year contract, depending on their study options.
What level of coaching qualifications do our instructors possess?
Our coaching staff holds UEFA licenses and has extensive experience in professional soccer environments, ensuring top-tier training and guidance for players. You can learn more about our staff on our website.
What is the process for international players to join the Academy?
Most of our players come from North America. Our team will guide them through the necessary steps, including visa arrangements and enrollment procedures, to ensure a smooth transition into the program.
How many teams does the Academy have?
We have one senior squad of 25 players, who compete in the senior league and a regional academy league to provide more tactical and technical competition, as well as greater exposure to different clubs.
Why Select Generation FC is the best International Academy?
We compete in high-level men's football, providing our players with opportunities to advance to NCAA programs or professional clubs. Our academy is a stepping stone, not a destination. Players receive premium living and playing conditions under UEFA-licensed coaches.
Select Generation's mission is to develop players and help connect them to their next career step. We don’t compete in leagues where winning doesn’t matter—we play for serious competition. Additionally, we offer high-level academic options and student funding for players wishing to continue their education.
Where are our players from?
Our scouting network is based in North America, with players from across the U.S. and Canada. We focus on discovering under-the-radar talent—players with athletic and technical ability who need further development in the tactical aspects of their game. Select Generation has extensive expertise in the North American soccer system and understands various pathways after high school graduation.
